RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0

"RG RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0" Review: The strongest movable range! Thorough comparison of the "RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0" with the previous model from 14 years ago.

In this issue, I would like to thoroughly compare and review the 2 "RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0" from the perspective of how it has evolved from past works!

RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam
This time, we will compare the old "RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam" released in 2010 (photo at left) and the new "RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam Ver. 2.0" (photo at right). For convenience, the older model is referred to as "Ver. 1.0.

"Ver. 2.0" does not use "Advanced MS Joint"

First of all, I would like to tell you that "Ver. 2.0" does not use "Advanced MS Joint" for the inner frame. The "Advanced MS Joint" is a special semi-completed runner, which was often used in the past RG series for skeletal frames, etc., where the framework was almost complete simply by detaching the parts. However, due to its delicate structure and the tendency for parts to fall off, it has been increasingly rejected in recent RG series. In this "Ver. 2.0," the "Advanced MS Joint" has been eliminated, and the internal frame is now assembled from scratch, just like in the previous MG (Master Grade) models.

core-fighter
First, a comparison of the "core fighters". Both the old and the new are built into the main body of the Gundam as a "core block.
core-fighter
In "Ver. 2.0", the clear parts of the canopy have been changed to "clear blue" and the canopy opens and closes. As with "Ver.1.0", the landing gear parts can be attached to the bottom to display in a grounded state.
core-block
When incorporated into the main body, it is transformed into a "core block" and stored inside the fuselage (common to both new and old models).
rx-78-2-gundam
The "core block" structure was reproduced in "Ver. 1.0," but there was no locking mechanism, and the weak point was that the upper body would slip out of place when the figure was moved.
rx-78-2-gundam
The charm of the "Ver. 1.0" is that it comes with a dummy "Core Block". This allows you to display the Gundam and the "Core Fighter" at the same time.

Both "Ver.1.0" and "Ver.2.0" come with a "Core Fighter" that can be transformed into a "Core Block" to be incorporated into the main body of the Gundam. Just to realize this gimmick in 1/144 scale is amazing! The major difference between the new and old models is that the "Ver. 1.0" comes with a dummy "Core Block" so that two models can be displayed at the same time.

Weak points of "Ver.1.0" have been improved! You can feel the technological progress in the movement.

rx-78-2-gundam
Comparison of the whole body. Molding color of "Ver.1.0" is a dull shade, but "Ver.2.0" has been changed to a bright tricolor color.
rx-78-2-gundam
"Ver. 1.0" had a hard time just getting it to stand up. "Ver. 2.0" improves this weak point, making it more self-supporting.
rx-78-2-gundam
Comparison of the head. The length of the antenna and the face have changed significantly. Vulcan of "Ver.1.0" is reproduced in yellow, but "Ver.2.0" is gray.
rx-78-2-gundam
The slit in the face mask is open in "Ver. 1.0". "Ver. 2.0" does not have the slits opened and recommends smudging. When "Ver. 1.0" was released, fans were divided as to which specification they preferred.
rx-78-2-gundam
One thing that caught my attention in "Ver. 2.0" was this vulcan. If you look closely, the vulcan appears to be buried. I don't know if this is a specification or a design error, but I think it is a point that needs to be repaired for those who are concerned about it.
rx-78-2-gundam
Comparison of torso and waist. In "Ver.1.0", the center was arranged in light blue color, but in "Ver.2.0", it is unified in blue. The yellow parts of the chest have been changed to a design that looks as if they are covered from above.
rx-78-2-gundam
This is the point where "Ver. 2.0" has evolved! The "core block" is incorporated inside the body, yet the upper body is flexible and movable.
rx-78-2-gundam
In "Ver. 2.0", the chest armor covering the cockpit opens and closes vertically. This is an original gimmick of "Ver.2.0".
rx-78-2-gundam
In addition, "Ver. 2.0" also opens and closes the shoulder armor back and forth.

"Ver. 2.0" also touts 'an articulated structure that returns to the original design,' and a new structure has been adopted in which the parts that look like joints bend properly.

rx-78-2-gundam
It is easy to see if you look at the wrist area, but the forearm is now finely divided and can be angled. This is a detail that might be overlooked, but it is really amazing here ......!
rx-78-2-gundam
"Ver. 1.0" came with only two types of hand parts: 'grip hand' and 'movable finger type', which caused problems with the ability to hold weapons. "Ver. 2.0" comes with not only a grip hand, but also a weapon hand, a flat hand, and a rifle hand, allowing you to hold the weapon without stress. This is a very welcome addition!
rx-78-2-gundam
Compare backpacks. "Ver. 1.0" is reproduced in its original design with white lines. In "Ver. 2.0", the base of the beam saber is movable, and the hole for the stand is exposed when the center part is opened.
rx-78-2-gundam
In "Ver. 2.0", the crotch axis is now movable. Also, in "Ver.1.0", the left and right armors often came off, but in "Ver.2.0", the parts are less likely to come off.
rx-78-2-gundam
The design of the legs has changed significantly, with a meaty design in "Ver. 2.0". Calf parts open and close.
rx-78-2-gundam
Both figures have a wide range of movement, but in the case of "Ver. 2.0", the upper body can be moved in detail block by block, the movement around the shoulders has been improved, and the wrist area can also be moved in detail.

We have compared the body so far, and it is not only the change in molding color and design, but also the increased points of movement in "Ver. 2.0".

"Ver.2" has an amazing range of motion.

From here, let's compare the weapons and see the amazing range of motion of "Ver. 2.0"!

rx-78-2-gundam
Compare shields. Surfaces vary in color and molding.
rx-78-2-gundam
"Ver. 2.0" adds gray detailing to the inside of the shield, eliminating the flimsy impression.
rx-78-2-gundam
Comparison of beam rifles. The "Ver.1.0" (left photo) had difficulty in holding the rifle because it is held by the "finger movable hand", but the "Ver.2.0" (right photo) comes with a "rifle handle" so it can be held firmly.
rx-78-2-gundam
Attack with beam rifle!
rx-78-2-gundam
As expected, "Ver. 2.0" is more movable! Not only the upper body, but also the arms and legs move in fine detail, allowing for flashy poses!
rx-78-2-gundam
rx-78-2-gundam
Comparison of Hyper Bazooka. At first glance, they look the same, but in "Ver. 2.0" (right), the barrel can be extended and retracted.
rx-78-2-gundam
Comparison of beam sabers. The "Ver.1.0" (left) included a long MG-class saber, but the "Ver.2.0" (right) is shorter and more balanced.

The saber grip of "Ver. 1.0" was divided into "for inserting into the back" and "for holding in the hand", but "Ver. 2.0" allows the user to hold the saber grip as is

rx-78-2-gundam
"Ver. 2.0" comes with a dedicated hand, so there is no more stress when holding the weapon.
rx-78-2-gundam
The "Ver. 2.0" Gundam that jumps at you! It's great that a slap hand is included!
rx-78-2-gundam

The birth of the "strongest movable range" Gundam! However, is there a problem with the head?

We have thoroughly compared the new and old "RG 1/144 RX-78-2 Gundam". However, the only point that concerns me is that the vulcan on the head is buried. It is not that noticeable if you do not look at it close-up, but if you are concerned about it, this is considered to be the point of refurbishment.

The point that made me most happy was the improvement of the weak point of parts falling off. When I was moving the two figures around for the photo shoot, "Ver. 1.0" not only had parts falling off, but also had many problems such as the upper body coming off on its own and dropping weapons all over the place....... However, "Ver. 2.0" had no such problems at all. This alone is an indication of evolution, but the true essence of "Ver. 2.0" is undoubtedly its "strongest range of motion". The "core block" structure of the upper body is finely movable, and the flexibility of the shoulder area and limbs is highly appreciated. In terms of mobility, I think this figure can be called the perfect RG!

Fine details. The RX-78's joints move as much as possible.

Unlike the Gundam of my childhood where most of the joints didn't move, and the previous RGs that were weak and fragile, this 2.0 has very fine details and as much as this, the joints move. It already has a different feel.
However, there are a few minor disappointments, such as the yellow parts of the chest ducts, but as an RX-78, it seems to be a completed model.

review-point

Too particular, regrettable model.

14 years after the first RG, Ver. 2.0 has finally been released.
This model is a 1/144 scale model with a lot of technology pushed into it.

The biggest topic this time is the movable abdomen, which has a movable axis in the core fighter.
However, while the technology is certainly impressive, it is questionable whether it was really necessary to go to such lengths with the first Gundam to make the abdomen movable.
The reason is that the abdomen is difficult to move and cannot be used for posing, and even if the abdomen is not movable, other parts of the body can move, so the pose can be decided.
Also, this model cannot be assembled without the core fighter built in, so it is not possible to display both the core fighter and the Gundam.

At the very least, I would have liked to see the operational abdomen parts and the transformable core fighter be separate, as in Ver. 1.0.

Beginners and blanks are not accepted!

This is a review by a light user who has not made plastic models in about 20 years!
I used to make 1/144, HG1/100, and BB Warrior models in the 90s as a child.

[Design]
The details and proportions are very modern, and the internal structure is finished in a very cool way.

[Crafted]
There is no cutting out of the back side or hard-to-see places as a matter of course, and it looks good from all angles.

[Reproducibility]
It is very elaborate.

[Durability]
I had a hard time making it, and sometimes I had to repeat the same process over and over again, but it is very durable and I was able to make it with zero damage.
Even after completion, it can be moved around easily.

[Ease of assembly]
It took me more than 6 hours to make this model kit, which was very difficult for my first Gunpla production in a long time.
The parts are small and the instructions were difficult to understand for me as an inexperienced user.

[Overall comment]
I am very satisfied with the finished product.
The internal structure of the machine is visible, so I displayed half of the body with the machine visible.
