Gelgoog Menace

"HG Gelgoog Menace" Review: Thorough comparison of the "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM" version of the "Gelgoog Menace" with the Char-custom version.

In this issue, I will highlight the features of the "Gelgoog Menace" Gundam Model Kits "HG 1/144 Gelgoog Menace (Lunamaria Hawk Custom)" that appears in "Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM", comparing it to the first Gelgoog!

Lunamaria's "Gelgoog Menace" is reproduced in the familiar red color.

First, let's start with a description of the "Gelgoog Menace".

This machine was developed by ZAFT as a successor to the "Zaku Warrior", and is a mobile suit under test operation by the World Peace Monitoring Organization "Compass" to which Kira Yamato and his team belong. It is characterized by two features as a Lunamaria machine: its "red coloring" and its exclusive "Bolero A" backpack. Another feature is the runner structure, which does not require poly caps, which is the mainstream these days, and is compatible with the "wizard system" of HGs released in the past. This area will be described later.

Gelgoog Menace
Here is the completed "HG 1/144 Gelgoog Menace (Lunamaria Hawk Custom)". While retaining the flavor of the first Gelgoog, the refined proportions with an up-to-date feel are irresistible!

The "Gelgoog Menace" is a design that respects the original Gelgoog.

Gelgoog Menace
Compared to the "HGUC 1/144 Gelgoog (Char Custom)" in the First Gundam.
Gelgoog Menace
The most distinctive feature of the "Gelgoog Menace (Lunamaria Hawk Custom)" is the atmospheric backpack "Bolero A" equipped on its back.

The "HGUC 1/144 Gelgoog Char Custom" that we will compare this time is a HG that was released in 2006. Although this Gundam plastic model is quite old, it has been reproduced with good proportions that do not spoil the impression of the play.

As a bit of trivia, the recently shipped "HGUC 1/144 Gelgoog Char Custom" is ABS-less, and the material has been changed to plastic for easier painting. The ones shipped in the early to mid-period were made of ABS plastic, which is not suitable for painting, so if you are thinking of purchasing the HG "Gelgoog Char Custom" now, avoid used ones and choose the new ones that have been re-released!

*The "Gelgoog Char Custom" used for this comparison is with the inside of the armor partially painted.

Gelgoog Menace
Comparison of the head. Both mono eyes are stickers, but the "Gelgoog Menace" has a convex molded mono eye and finely sculpted mono eye rails. The mono eye itself is movable from left to right in both cases.
Gelgoog Menace
The shoulders of the first Gelgoog have an axial connection. The "Gelgoog Menace" is equipped with the "SEED Action System", a feature of the "SEED FREEDOM" series, and is movable up and down, back and forth. The tip is a ball joint connection. However, the first Gelgoog is no less movable, and can move up and down, back and forth, with a fat axis connection.
Gelgoog Menace
The inside of the fuselage of the "Gelgoog Menace" is structured like this, and the joints are flexible and movable.
Gelgoog Menace
Compare the arms. Both have holes in the forearms to attach shields, and from the second arm down they roll and rotate.
Gelgoog Menace
As expected of a new kit, the "Gelgoog Menace" is easy to assemble, and the frame (the center gray part) has a double-jointed structure that allows the arms to bend well!
Gelgoog Menace
The leg connection system has also evolved, and in the "Gelgoog Menace" the axis itself is movable. It is also interesting that the inside of the rear skirt has a similar design, as if respecting the first Gelgoog!
Gelgoog Menace
The voluminous legs are also designed with respect. The detailed parts on the sides of the "Gelgoog Menace" are color-coded in both "white" and "gray" parts.
Gelgoog Menace
Comparison of the vernier near the sole and heel. The "Gelgug Menace" has a sharp design with a sharper sole.

The most distinctive feature of the "Gelgoog Menace" is the "Bolero" backpack!

The "Gelgoog Menace" is a more stylish version of the first Gelgoog, with a design closer to that of the original Gelgoog. The movable surface was also powered up, and there were almost no joints (lines that form between parts), making it a good kit with excellent color separation.

Let's take a look at the differences in weapons, focusing on the "Bolero A" backpack for atmospheric use, which is the most distinctive feature of the "Lunamaria Hawk"!

Gelgoog Menace
The back of the Char's Gelgoog is simple, with only a hole for a beam naginata and shield.
Gelgoog Menace
The "Gelgoog Menace" comes with the atmospheric backpack "Bolero A". The left and right wings can be unfolded, and can be pulled up to an angle like a flight form.
Gelgoog Menace
The right side is equipped with a live ammunition weapon "Peregrinus 6-round short-range guided missile launcher". Use stickers on the red section and the blue section of the wing. On the left side, equipped with the "Infernus Electromagnetic Cannon", a linear gun only the Lunamaria aircraft is equipped with, and which is exclusive to Bolero. This one can pull the linear gun forward (in the photo below, the linear gun is pulled out).
Gelgoog Menace
Floating display. Of course, it is compatible with standard 3mm axis stands such as Action Base.
Gelgoog Menace
When viewed from behind, there is a lot of information! When viewed as an HG series, the density is highly reproduced!
Gelgoog Menace
The "Beam Rifle" of the first Gelgoog is compared with the "Enhanced Beam Rifle" of the "Gelgoog Menace". The "Enhanced Beam Rifle" is reproduced in a design that faintly resembles the first-generation rifle. It also features a "long range" design for precision sniping!
Gelgoog Menace
Gelgoog army attacks with rifles!
Gelgoog Menace
In addition, the "Gelgoog Menace" also includes the live ammunition weapon that was carried in the final battle, the "Type 35 modified prototype Railgun".
Gelgoog Menace
The foregrip can be raised and held with both hands. The "SEED Action System" around the shoulder area allows the user to hold the weapon without any difficulty.
Gelgoog Menace
Comparison of the "Beam Naginata" of the first Gelgoog and the "Magnus Gladius Special Slashing Spear" of the "Gelgoog Menace".
Gelgoog Menace
The color of the beam blade has changed, but this is a melee weapon with a similar feel.
Gelgoog Menace
Comparison of the first Gelgoog's "Shield" and the "Gelgoog Menace"'s Refulgence Beam Shield. The shield of the "Gelgoog Menace" is a foldable type, and the effect parts that are attached when deployed are "polarized molding" parts that allow you to enjoy the change in color tone depending on the angle of the light source.
Gelgoog Menace
"Gelgug menace" to prevent attacks!
Gelgoog Menace
The "Gelgoog Menace" respected the design of the original Gelgoog, while incorporating a variety of armament gimmicks typical of the "SEED" series!

Compatible with the "Wizard System" of the "HG GUNDAM SEED" series!

The "Wizard System" is a type of armament conversion system developed by ZAFT, and is specifically installed in the "ZAKU WARRIOR", "ZAKU PHANTOM", "BUCUE HOUND" and “DOM TROOPER". The "Gelgoog Menace" is a common standard with these previously released "HG GUNDAM SEED" series Gundam models, so you can play with it by reconfiguring the wizards.

Gelgoog Menace
This is the "Gunner Wizard" included with the "HG 1/144 Gunner Zaku Warrior (Lunamaria Hawk Custom)". It can be replaced without modification.
Gelgoog Menace
As long as the Gunpla is Wizard-standard, it is great to be able to play with interchangeable items from the past!

Equipped with a wide variety of armaments and the "Wizard System"! "Gelgoog Menace" is "buy"!

As expected of the "latest HG released in 2024", it moves well, has a variety of gimmicks, and can be combined with some of the HGs released in the past, making it a highly recommended Gunpla. If I were to mention a weak point, it would be the heavy use of stickers around the "Bolero A" backpack. Especially around the wing, a wide area of stickers are used, so if possible, it is recommended to paint parts of the model to enjoy the upgraded look!

SEED Heavy MS

This is a kit of the Gelgoog of the same name as the last mass-produced model of the Zeon series MS that appeared in SEEDFREEDOM during the One Year War.
The kit is easy to assemble as the previous models in the series and has the same range of motion as the Soul of Robot, allowing the figure to be posed standing on its knees despite its bulky appearance.
The sliding mechanism of the hip joints allows for a wide variety of expressions on the legs.
The backpack, similar to that of the Justice series, is fitted with a missile launcher and railgun, and when the backpack is removed, a Zaku-like wizard can also be equipped with relative ease.
Polarized clear parts are used for the beam shield, shining.
On the back of the waist, there is an armament mount latch, so you can mount either a beam naginata or a beam rifle, whichever you prefer.

review-rating

Lumpy and good looking. A little long torso? The backpack color coding is still the devil.

This kit seemed to be the best in the drafting stage of SEED Freedom.
Highly recommended for price satisfaction.

[Design]
I don't feel it when it is posed, but it looks long or unbalanced when it is standing.
The design is not so bad if you put on the armament.

[Crafted]
The white parts around the vernier are color-coded and look good even when unassembled.
There are also verniers in the waist and foot skirts, and I like this area because it feels like a space century Gelgoog.
Completeness is not uncomfortable even when unpainted except for the backpack even unassembled.

[Reproducibility]
The structure of the SEED action system contributes considerably, and the range of motion is wide.
It is a little disappointing that the clear parts of the x-shield were not polarized resin.
(Correction) I heard that the clear parts are polarized molding. It was different from my image of polarized molding)

[Durability]
I was a little concerned about the inside of the head. I had to cut off the part where the mono eye moves a little.
I also almost cut off the projection near the nose. It might be a trap.
The retention is quite good. I think it is the wrists that seem to be worn out.

[Ease of assembly]
The number of runners is probably more than recent HGs.
Backpack including wing is covered with stickers. It is not easy for hand-painters because of the large area.
I wish they could have done something about it at the drawing stage.

[Overall review]
The figure is very rugged and good looking.
The kit looks better when posed than when standing.
The Naginata does not pose as well as I would like.
The quality of the workmanship is obvious, but like the Rising Freedom, I know that color-coding the wings would be a problem if it were made into a kit, so I wonder if it could have been solved by using thruster wings or something similar at the planning stage.
That's what I was thinking as I was building it.
Pricey, but a good work.
