"Dom" and "Rick Dom" Review: What are the differences between Dom and Rick Dom? A thorough comparison using MG Gunpla!

Many people may be wondering, "What is the difference between Dom and Rick Dom?" This time, I will thoroughly explain the differences in terms of "settings" and "Gunplas"!

The three visible differences are the backpack, rear skirt, and foot unit.

The MG versions of Dom and Rick Dom were also released in 1999, but the 2022 version has been upgraded with new molds and parts, while reusing some of the runners. In fact, the weapon runner uses parts from "MG Zaku Ver. 2.0", and the joint frame runner uses parts from "MG Dwadge", making this Gundam model kit a collection of various Zeon Master Grade models.

dom
Comparison of the entire body. The left is Dom, and the right is Rick Dom. What is immediately apparent at first glance is the change in the color of the purple armor.
dom
Looking at the rear view, you can see that the shape of the backpack and rear skirt has changed.

To put it simply, "Dom is for ground use" and "Rick Dom is for space use". Rick Dom is a mass-produced model of the land-based mobile suit Dom that has been modified for space use, and "Rick" means "for space use". While the Rick Dom is said to have enhanced verniers in the waist and leg areas compared to the Dom, the visual differences are limited to three points: "backpack", "rear skirt", and "foot sole unit". Another notable feature is the change in molded colors and included weapons.

dom
Close-up comparison. The left is Dom, and the right is Rick Dom. The molded color of the purple parts has changed. Dom has a high saturation, while Rick Dom is reproduced in a subdued purple. When viewed from the front, there is almost no difference in shape.
dom
Comparing backpacks. The back area has changed significantly, with different shapes for the backpack parts and verniers. There are no changes to the heat saber or the parts that mount it.
dom
Comparison of rear skirts (rear waist armor sections). The top is Dom, and the bottom is Rick Dom. The shape has also changed in this area, with Rick Dom being larger.
dom
Comparison of the interior of the rear skirt. The red backing parts are also different, and each has detailed molding. There is no change to the vernier itself.
dom
Comparison of the soles of the feet. Dom is characterized by its ability to glide at high speeds across the ground using hover technology, so the soles of its feet are shaped like hover units. On the other hand, Rick Dom's feet have been changed to vernier units.

The differences between the main bodies are the molded colors and three points: the back backpack, waist rear skirt, and foot unit. When viewed from the front, there is almost no difference, but if I had to point out something, it would be that the shape of the waist rear skirt, which is slightly visible, is a little larger. The rear view and foot unit have changed significantly. The included weapons are very different, so let's take a look at those.

The weapons included in each kit are quite different!

Here is a list of weapons included with MG Dom.

MG Dom comes with a variety of weapons, including a Giant Bazooka, Raketen Bazooka, MS Machine Gun, two magazines (with different shapes for the left and right sides), two Sturm Fausts (with switchable mounting parts), and a Heat Saber.

On the other hand, MG Rick Dom is simpler in content, with only three weapons included: the Giant Bazooka, Beam Bazooka, and Heat Saber. The Giant Bazooka and Heat Saber are also included with MG Dom, so the Beam Bazooka seems to be the selling point of Rick Dom.

dom
The one on the left is MG Dom, and the one on the right is MG Rick Dom. As you can see, there is no difference between the Giant Bazookas. All weapons can be held in either hand.
dom
MG Dom comes with a Raketen Bazooka that is not included with MG Rick Dom (top photo). It features a distinctive design with bulletproof plates. On the other hand, MG Rick Dom comes with a giant beam bazooka that is not included with MG Dom (bottom photo).

"MG Dom" is notable for its large number of included weapons.

The main features of the MG Dom are "Raketen Bazooka", "MS Machine Gun", and "Sturm Faust". These are not included with the MG Rick Dom.

Features of the MG Dom: Equipped with Raketen Bazooka and MS Machine Gun
dom
"Raketen Bazooka" can be held with both hands. Its bulletproof plate is a distinctive feature. Incidentally, "Giant Bazooka" can also be held with both hands.
dom
The heat sabers are the same, with the yellow saber portion colored yellow.
dom
Equipped with an MS machine gun. According to the setting, it is a solid-projectile firearm for MS called "MMP-80", which has a caliber of 90 mm but is said to have the same power as a 120 mm Zaku machine gun.
dom
Dom firing his machine gun! Not only bazookas, but machine guns suit him too!
dom
By removing the armor on the side of the waist, you can mount an MS machine gun and magazine. The magazine is included on both the left and right sides, and is characterized by its different shapes.
dom
By using special mounting parts, "Sturm Faust" can also be attached to the side of the waist.
dom
Dom unleashes "Sturm Faust"!

"MG Dom" features more included weapons than "MG Rick Dom". If you don't care about the beam bazooka, "MG Dom" offers better play value. Now let's take a look at the weapons included with "MG Rick Dom".

MG Rick Dom's huge beam bazooka is appealing.

dom
This is "MG Rick Dom". Its biggest selling point is that it comes with a huge prototype beam weapon, the Beam Bazooka.
dom
Back view. The difference is clear when compared to Dom, but it would be difficult to tell whether it is Dom or Rick Dom if only one side were shown.
dom
The beam bazooka, which is the selling point, uses jewel seals. However, the base of the bazooka is made up of a simple number of parts.
dom

dom
Photographed in a box art style. Displaying it in such a way as to show the vernier units on the soles of the feet brings out Rick Dom's distinctive features.

It's okay to choose the one that comes with your favorite weapon.

dom
Which Dom do you prefer...!?

We have compared "MG Dom" and "MG Rick Dom", but to be honest, when viewed from the front, there is little noticeable difference between the two. However, when viewed from the rear or displayed with the feet exposed, the differences become apparent. In summary, the main features are that the purple color has changed and the included weapons are significantly different.

If you're unsure which one to buy, instead of choosing based on the main body, you might want to consider selecting the one that comes with your preferred weapons. If you're planning to paint or apply decals, "MG Dom" is a good choice if you want to recreate the black Tri-Stars Dom. On the other hand, if you're interested in painting it red to recreate Char-custom Rick Dom, "MG Rick Dom" could be an interesting option!
